- Help Winsock over SLIP !
-
- I'm trying to set up a WinSock Client and Server over a slip connection,
- but its not working.
-
- The Setup:
- - Two 386s connected via serial ports.
- - No dialup , no hardware handshake
- - Both running - Trumpet Winsock 1.0 Rev A
- - TCPMAN .exe
-
- - Client - Mfinger.exe from { sunsite.unc.edu }
- - COM3 , 2400 BAUD.
- - Trumpet Winsock
- IP address = 198.133.162.148
- Name server= 198.133.162.1 { I don't think there is a name server}
- Time server= 0.0.0.0
- Domain Suffix = left blank
- MTU = 512
- TCP RWIN = 1448
- TCP MSS = 552
- Packet vector = 00
- Demand Load Timeout = 5
- Internal SLIP = yes
- SLIP Port = 3
- Baud Rate = 2400
- Hardware Handshake = no
- CSLIP = yes
- On line status detection = none
-
- On the other computer.
-
- - Server - txtsrv.exe from { sunsite.unc.edu }
- - A txt server - claims it will respond to the finger protocol
- - COM2 , 2400 BAUD.
- - Trumpet Winsock
- IP address = 198.133.162.149
- Name server= 198.133.162.1
- Time server= 0.0.0.0
- Domain Suffix = left blank
- MTU = 512
- TCP RWIN = 1448
- TCP MSS = 552
- Packet vector = 00
- Demand Load Timeout = 5
- Internal SLIP = yes
- SLIP Port = 2
- Baud Rate = 2400
- Hardware Handshake = no
- CSLIP = yes
- On line status detection = none
-
-
- Proceedure
- - on both computers I fire up tcpman.exe ( no problems)
- - then I fire up ( txtsrv ) and (mfinger ) on their separate computers.
- ( no problems )
- - then with mfinger I try to finger the server.
- - In mfinger's HOST dialog box I enter:
- " 198.133.162.149 " ( the servers IP )
-
- - mfinger responds: " cannot locate port for finger "
-
- I have been monitoring the serial line and there doesnot seem the be any
- activity. So my quess is that winsock is not talking to the serial port.
- shouldn't it at least send some characters over the serial port to the server.
-
-
- What am I doing wrong?
-
- Please help.
- Thanks

- I agree.
-
- I am running the free version that comes on the disk in the back of the
- "Internet Tour Guide for Windows" and it has been 100% rock solid now for
- about two weeks. I use WinQVT and Mosaic daily. NOT ONE hang, lockup,
- GPF, or other misbehavior has been seen here.
-
- I'm beating the hell out of it with a 28.8 V.FC modem too, clocked at 57.6.
- Smokin' fast and dead-nuts on reliable. I regularly leave links up for
- DAYS at a time without a single complaint..

- I've noticed the same behavior. I'm running PC-NFS, if it makes any difference.

- Subject: in refernece to ws_gmail etc, whats the difference ...
-
- All in all in short, What the difference between a listner and a client?
- for example a smtp listener and client?
- What exacly is a pop server? *how long do smtp servers try to send
- to a listener before it gives up? *
- I guess these are basic questions, but ignorance abounds.

- I'm running WS_FTP version 94.01.22 with LAN Workplace with no problems.
- Maybe you're using old versions of the software?
